  • The biggest advantage: "Two in one," it both rehydrates and electrolytes while providing energy.

  • Disadvantage: It might be a bit "heavy" for some people with sensitive stomachs.

  • Playbook usage: The “default” and most reliable choice for most training sessions and endurance races lasting over 90 minutes.

  • For example: Most popular sports drinks (Pocari, Gatorade, etc.).

  • Imagine: An efficient public bus carrying both passengers (water) and goods (energy) on a regular basis.

Hypertonic: A Heavy-Duty Energy "Cargo Shipment"

  • Scientific definition: A solution with a higher concentration of solutes than blood (usually containing carbohydrates > 8%).

  • Mechanism of action: Because it is so concentrated, the body has to draw water from the blood into the stomach to dilute it first. This significantly slows down the rehydration process.

  • The biggest advantage: Provides maximum power in the smallest volume.

  • Disadvantages & Risks: Slow absorption, may cause temporary dehydration, and a high risk of digestive disorders if not used correctly.

  • Playbook usage:

    • When the primary goal is to recharge (ultra-long races).

    • Immediately after recovery training.

    • Unwritten rule: Always drink 200-250ml of water with each sachet of gel.

  • Examples: Energy gels, energy gummies, soft drinks.

  • Imagine: A super-heavy freight train, moving slowly but carrying an enormous amount of cargo (energy).

Should I take salt tablets?

Salt tablets can be helpful in extremely hot conditions, but use caution. Sports drinks or electrolyte tablets dissolved in water are a safer and more balanced option.

Is coconut water a good sports drink?
